Building a large-scale outdoor animatronic dinosaur attraction inside an existing forest—without turning it into another concrete-heavy theme park.

That’s what we tackled with Origin Island in Hefei Binhu National Forest Park. The project integrated over 100 animatronic dinosaurs into the existing woodland, walking trails, and elevated paths.

Our approach was straightforward: Don’t build around the forest. Build with it.

The Strategy: Integrating Dinosaurs into a Living Forest

Hefei Binhu National Forest Park had the natural assets—a vast, beautiful forest landscape. But natural environments alone don’t drive repeat visits.

So the project aimed to develop a high-value animatronic dinosaur attraction within the existing landscape. Give visitors a real reason to explore deeper. Not replace the forest with a conventional amusement park, but activate what’s already there. Add entertainment and interaction while keeping the woodland’s character intact.

Families with young children, mainly kids between 3 and 8 years old.

Parents needed more than static displays. For them, this dinosaur attraction needed to offer walking, exploration, interaction, and photography—all in a safe outdoor environment.

The forest setting also opened doors for other visitors: photography enthusiasts, cosplay communities, people hunting for immersive photo experiences. This mix shaped everything from dinosaur selection to placement, scale, and interaction design.

Choosing an animatronic dinosaur park theme connected directly to the site. A forest already feels prehistoric. Unlike themes demanding colorful artificial architecture, dinosaurs slip into woodland landscapes without visual conflict.

They bring something unusual together:
Instant Recognition + Imagination + Entertainment + Educational Value.

Kids spot a T-Rex immediately. Parents see the learning potential. The forest provides atmosphere no artificial set could match. The theme works with the landscape, not against it.

Designing the Visitor Experience

The dinosaur attraction design wasn’t just about placing dinosaurs where space allowed. Their positions followed scale, sightlines, spatial hierarchy, and emotional flow:

  • T-Rex at the Entrance: An immediate visual landmark. The scale and recognizable silhouette set the theme before visitors even enter the deep forest. Natural photo opportunity. Clear identity right at the entrance.
  • Long-Necked Herbivores in the Woodland: They use the vertical space between trees. You see their elevated necks through vegetation gaps before reaching the animal itself. The forest’s restricted sightlines turn a simple display into gradual discovery—suspenseful, deliberate.
  • Triceratops in Family Areas: Approachable herbivores for younger visitors. Their recognizable, non-predatory forms create a welcoming tone. Balances the T-Rex excitement with family-friendly interaction.

In any outdoor animatronic dinosaur attraction, some of the most effective elements aren’t the dinosaurs themselves. They’re the details around them.

Themed off-road vehicles, barrels, rocks, elevated walkways—these give scale references. A dinosaur next to a Jeep feels bigger. One looming beside an elevated bridge feels closer, more intense. These create natural photography spots where visitors become part of the scene, not just observers. We weren’t building a movie set. We wanted that feeling of stepping into a prehistoric world.

Sound works as an environmental tool here. Not generic background music filling the forest, but selective dinosaur calls and environmental audio. Low-frequency rumbles arrive before you see the animal. Builds anticipation. Makes the forest feel inhabited, while still blending with natural sounds.

Visitor circulation got the same attention. Ground-level paths, elevated walkways, changing viewpoints—guests experience the same environment from different heights. A dinosaur that feels enormous from the ground creates a completely different impression from above.

Overcoming Site & Engineering Constraints

Building an outdoor animatronic dinosaur site in a living forest creates a different set of engineering constraints. We applied one logic to every technical hurdle: Constraint → Decision → Execution → Value.

  • Constraint: Continuous outdoor exposure plus dense vegetation, high humidity, heavy visitor contact.
  • Solution: Specialized UV-resistant coatings, moisture-sealed joints, impact-resistant finishes.
  • Value: Designed for better long-term durability and easier maintenance in a challenging outdoor environment.
  • Constraint: Visible cables and control cabinets would kill the prehistoric immersion.
  • Solution: We routed systems through visual blind spots, integrating them into themed rocks and elevated walkways.
  • Value: Minimal visual impact on the environment. Technology serves the story without breaking it.
  • Constraint: Restricted forest access meant no fully assembled large dinosaurs could be delivered.
  • Solution: Modular internal frames for transport in manageable sections, assembled on-site.
  • Value: Massive scale delivered without damaging trees or needing heavy construction roads.
  • Constraint: Forest acoustics and moving vegetation mess with standard indoor sensor and audio setups.
  • Solution: Calibrated sensors to ignore wildlife and branches. Tuned low-frequency audio to the forest’s unique acoustics.
  • Value: More reliable, context-aware visitor interactions that feel natural to the environment.

Project Outcome & Core Philosophy

26,000 m² of existing woodland transformed into a fully integrated animatronic dinosaur attraction—without becoming a conventional built theme park.

This turnkey dinosaur attraction delivered:

The result: a complete visitor journey built around the existing landscape, combining exploration, interaction, and photography within a natural forest environment.

“Animatronic dinosaurs are not standalone products. They are components of a larger visitor ecosystem.”

Delivering a complex animatronic dinosaur project demanded seamless coordination between theme design, environmental integration, mechanical engineering, and on-site commissioning. For complex projects, this integration matters far more than just choosing the largest or most expensive model.

Busy visitor pathways with flying pterosaur animatronics at a successful dinosaur attraction.
Diverse themed environments at an animatronic dinosaur park, featuring elephant animatronics and water features.
